Minimum System Requirements =============================== - PCI 2.1 compliant system - Pentium(R) class or faster processor - 16MB of system memory - Obsidian2 200SB NOTE: MGV companion VGA daughter card does not require a PCI expansion slot because it connects only to the Obsidian2 200SB. Full length PCI slot is required for Obsidian2 200SB (ATX form factor recommended). - Windows 95 or Windows 98 (or later) - Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (or later) - VGA compatible monitor II. Before You Begin =================== Because the MGV is a daughter card that connects to the Obsidian2 200SB, you will need to perform the hardware installation procedure for the Obsidian2 200SB with MGV in the Obsidian2 200SB Installation Guide. After the hardware installation is complete, power up the computer. Install the MGV device drivers before the Obsidian2 200SB software drivers for your appropriate operating system. A. NOTES FOR WINDOWS NT ------------------------ Before installing the Obsidian2 200SB with MGV, you must configure Windows NT for VGA display. Be sure to log onto the computer with an account that has local Administrator privileges (this is required for updating the system registry). 1. From the Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel. 2. Double click on the Display icon. The Display Properties dialog will appear. 3. Select the Settings tab and click the Display Type button. The Display Type dialog will appear. 4. In the Adapter Type section, click on the Change button. The Change Display dialog will appear. 5. Select Standard Display Types in the Manufactures section then VGA compatible display adapters in the Display section. Click on the OK button. 6. You may be prompted for the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM. Insert the Windows NT CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 7. You are now ready to begin the Windows NT driver installation for MGV. III. MGV Installation ===================== A. Windows 95 OSR 2 -------------------- 1. After installing the Obsidian2 200SB device drivers you will be prompted to restart the computer. Click on the No button. 2. Windows 95 may display a dialog that no video device exists. Click on the Cancel button if this message appears. 3. Windows will detect a new Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and display the Update Device Driver Wizard. 4. Insert the Obsidian2 Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. 5. The wizard will attempt to find updated drivers for Quantum3D Obsidian2 200SB on the CD-ROM. The Update Device Wizard will prompt for other locations for the device drivers. Click on the Other Locations button. 6. You will be prompted for the location. Enter X:\MGV95 (where X is the driver letter for the CD-ROM drive). Click on the Finish button. 7. Windows will copy the drivers from the CD-ROM. 8. Reboot the computer when prompted. 9. You can configure color depth and resolution for the MGV from the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog. B. Windows 95 -------------- 1. After installing the Obsidian2 200SB device drivers you will be prompted to restart the computer. Click on the No button. 2. Windows 95 may display a dialog that no video device exists. Click on the Cancel button if this message appears. 3. Windows will detect a new Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and display the New Hardware Found dialog. 4. Select the Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer option and click on the OK button. 5. Insert the Obsidian2 Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. 6. At the Install from disk dialog, specify X:\MGV95 (where X is the driver letter of the CD-ROM drive) in the Copy manufacturer's files from field and click on the OK button. Windows will copy the drivers from the CD-ROM. 7. Reboot the computer when prompted. 8. You can configure color depth and resolution for the MGV from the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog. C. Windows NT 4.0 ------------------ 1. Power on the computer. During boot up you will be prompted to select the operating system you want to start. Select Windows NT Workstation version 4.00 [VGA mode]. 2. Log onto the computer with an account that has local Administrator privileges (this is required for updating the system registry). 3. The Invalid Display Settings dialog may appear. Click on the OK button. 4. From the Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel. 5. Double click on the Display icon. The Display Properties dialog will appear. 6. Select the Settings tab and click onthe Display Type button. The Display Type dialog will appear. 7. In the Adapter Type section, click on the Change button. The Change Display dialog will appear. 8. Click on the Have Disk button. The Install From Disk dialog will appear. 9. Insert the Obsidian2 Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. In the Copy manufacturer's files from field type X:\MGVNT (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive). 10. Windows NT will display the Quantum3D MGV 2D Graphics Card in the Change Display dialog. Click on the OK button. 11. The Third Party Driver dialog will appear and inform you that you are about to install a third party driver and do you want to proceed. Click on the Yes button. Windows NT will copy the device drivers to the hard drive. 12. When the installation is complete, the Installing Driver dialog will appear. Click on the OK button. 13. Close the Display Type dialog. 14. Close the Display Properties dialog. 15. Reboot the computer when prompted. 16. During boot up you will be prompted to select the operating system you want to start. Select Windows NT Workstation version 4.00. 17. Log on to the computer. Windows NT will then display the Invalid Display Settings dialog because a new graphics driver has been installed. Click on the OK button. You can now configure color depth and resolution for the MGV. 18. To verify that the installation has been successful, restart the computer. You should no longer receive error message dialogs. IV. Upgrading Drivers for the MGV Windows 95 ============================================ 1. Start Windows 95. 2. From the Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel. 3. Double click on the Display icon. The Display Properties dialog will appear. 4. Select the Settings tab and click the Advanced Properties button. 5. The Advanced Display Properties dialog will appear. Click on the Change button. 6. The Select Device dialog will appear. Click on the Have Disk button. The Install From Disk dialog will appear. 7. Insert the Obsidian2 Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. In the Copy manufacturer files from field type X:\MGV95 (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive). 8. When prompted to select a device, select the Quantum3D MGV 2D graphics card. Windows 95 will copy the device drivers to the hard drive. 9. Click on the Close button in the Advanced Display Properties dialog. 10. Click on the Close button in the Display Properties dialog. 11. Reboot the computer when prompted. 12. You can configure color depth and resolution for the MGV from the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog. V. Upgrading Drivers for the MGV Windows NT ============================================ 1. Power on the computer. During boot up you will be prompted to select the operating system you want to start. Select Windows NT Workstation version 4.00 [VGA mode]. 2. Log onto the computer with an account that has local Administrator privileges (this is required for updating the system registry). 3. Invalid Display Settings dialog may appear. Click on the OK button. 4. From the Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel. 5. Double click on the Display icon. You can now configure color depth and resolution for the MGV. 18. To verify that the installation has been successful, restart the computer. You should no longer receive error message dialogs. VI. Upgrading the MGV BIOS for PAL TV Output ============================================ The MGV provides 2D TV output capability from the Obsidian2 200SB and is controlled by the MGV BIOS. The BIOS is programmed by the factory for NTSC TV output. If you require PAL TV output support, you will need to flash the MGV BIOS with the Update utility located on the Obsidian Family Driver CD-ROM in the \MGV95\BIOS or the \MGVNT\BIOS directory. To update the BIOS, perform the following for your operating system: A. Windows 95 -------------- 1. Start the computer in MS-DOS mode or boot the computer using a DOS boot diskette(to start the computer in MS-DOS mode, hit the F8 key during start up and select the Command prompt only option. NOTE: You will need to have CD-ROM drive access in MS-DOS mode to flash the BIOS from the Obsidian2 Installation CD. Otherwise, copy the contents of the \MGV95\BIOS directory to a temporary directory on the hard drive. 2. Insert the Obsidian2 Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Change directory to X:\MGV95\BIOS (where X is the driver letter of the CD-ROM drive). NOTE: If you have copied the contents of the \MGV95\BIOS directory to a temporary directory on your hard driver, change to that directory. 4. Type "UPDATE PAL". The MGV BIOS is automatically updated. 5. When the update is complete, you will be prompted to restart the computer. Restart the computer normally. 6. If you need to restore the MGV BIOS for NTSC TV output, simply perform the MGV BIOS update again using "UPDATE NTSC" in place of UPDATE PAL. B. Windows NT -------------- 1. Copy the contents of the \MGVNT\BIOS directory on the Obsidian2 Installation CD to a floppy diskette. 2. Restart the computer using a MS-DOS boot diskette. 3. Remove the boot diskette and insert the diskette that contains the contents of \MGVNT\BIOS directory. 4. At the floppy drive prompt, type "UPDATE PAL". The MGV BIOS is automatically updated. 5. When the update is complete, you will be prompted to restart the computer. Remove the diskette and restart the computer normally. 6. If you need to restore the MGV BIOS for NTSC TV output, simply perform the MGV BIOS update again using "UPDATE NTSC" in place of UPDATE PAL. VII. Removing the MGV Drivers ============================= 1. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel. 2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs, select the Install/Uninstall tab. 3. Scroll through the list and select the Quantum3D MGV 2D Graphics Card listing. 4. Click on the Add/Remove button. 5. Shutdown the computer. Remove the Obsidian2 200SB with MGV from the computer. 6. When Windows is restarted, the last portion of the removal is done automatically.
